Application and Use Guidelines for Tile
Application and Use
Avente Tile uses the following icons to help determine if a tile is appropriate for certain applications like a shower floor our outdoor fountain. If you are uncertain about a tile's ability to perform, please let us know. Remember, that use guidelines require installation per the Tile Council of North America (TCNA) Handbook for Ceramic Tile. You should always inspect material prior to installation because installed material cannot be accepted for return or credit. Additionally, always lay out material prior to installation to properly blend and balance color.

Indoor Use - Tile is suitable for indoor locations. Make sure to confirm if can be used on walls, floors, or wet applications.

Wall Use - Tile is suitable for use on a wall. Relief tile, molding, trim, and glossy tiles are often limited to only wall use due to tripping hazards or material strenght.
Floor Use - Tile is suitable for use on floors and test data should be available to tiles me testing requirements. Floor tiles should have a Dynamic Coefficient of Friction (DCOF) value of 0.42 or greater per ANSI standards. The older standard is that Static Coefficient of Friction (SCOF) value of 0.6 or greater per ASTM standards. There are many considerations for floor tile, see our guidelines. |
Wet Applications - Tile is suitable for use in wet applications like shower floors and steam rooms when properly installed and maintained. Suitable for submerged locations like pools or fountains when properly installed. Some glazed tiles may require clear over-glaze and porous tiles may require special sealing. |
Outdoor Use - Tile is suitable for outdoor locations subject to climates not affected by freeze/thaw conditions and installation methods. If you live in areas subjected to hard freezes make sure the tile has been tested for use in freeze/thaw conditions as noted by the Snowflake icon on our site. Encaustic cement tiles and ceramic tile that is not high-fired are porous and absorb water that can result in the tile cracking. |
Frost Resistant - Tile is suitable for outdoor locations affected by freeze/thaw conditions when propoerly installed. In general, porcelain and vitreous tiles are considered frost resistant
